Comics, set go

XD

XD

Estuve a Punto de
Miguel Bose

Estuve a punto de,
a casi casi nada,
a punto estuve de,
partirme bien la cara.
Pa siempre atarme al pie de,
la perra de tu cama.
Estuve a punto de,
romperme hueso a hueso.
A punto estuve de,
lo que se dice muerto.
Estuve a esto de,
colgar mi vida de un...
¡ay, ay!, solo a esto,
ay, ay, por un beso, ¡ay!

No tiene na que ver,
na tiene que ver el miedo,
sencillamente fue que,
sentí la soga al cuello,
conté con peligro,
y di un tajo neto a tiempo.
Al filo, a esto de,
colgar mi vida,
Ay ay, solo a esto,
Ay ay, Por un beso hay.

Y no, nada tiene que ver,
na tiene que ver mi celo.
Tu boca, tu cintura,
que no nos divida el cielo,
en dos mortalidades,
mitad locura y verso,
y a esto de, me dije stop.
Colgar mi vida de un,
ay ay solo a esto,
ay ay por un beso,
ay ay, solo a esto, ay.
Colgar mi vida de un,
ay ay solo a esto,
ay ay, por un beso ay.

Pensar que estuve a esto,
a casi casi nada,
por culpa esto de,
la perra de tu cama.
A punto y a esto de,
liarla bien liada,

Pendejeta no soy.. bueno, no mucho.

GATITOS!!! Me encanta decir esa palabra.

J-Town and my Car

Well... just like a very cheesy american movie, the FBI arrived to Juareztown some hours ago... some say days, but I want to believe in the shorter ammount of time. I'll say hours.

For years now, J-town has been vandalized by heartless criminals and no one turned their eye. Drug wars, it's Mexico's problem. Yeah, Mexico's problem. But who remembers J-town in the sixties, the seventies and the eighties, when all the Chuco dealers would come here to settle their business? How about them cowboys? We all seem to forget that all the chuco kids would come to J-town, do their desmadre, and go back to good old mommy and daddy.

Now, the FBI is here because they killed a couple of people from the consulate when a couple of months ago, when kids got shot at a party they said it was not their problem. Now is their problem. Rich people are involved --- I'm sorry, rich American people.

I do not live in the US. I love and live in Juareztown. The city who gave birth to the burrito and - some say - the Margarita over at the Kentucky Bar. I live and love J-town and I plan to say, even after I die.

In lighter news...

I started to get my car's papers in order. It was a fine day to go out and just be me and my baby. We went to get drivers license (Finally! I don't look like a convicted fellon in this one; I actually look good!!!) and then we went to see about the plaques. I think that if all goes well my baby will have his plaques ready by the end of the month. I'll keep you updated.

Then, since we were already out, I took a look at that car and said, "I know -- I owe you a spa!" and there we went. We got to the car-spa and he got "the works". He is all pretty now... even smells like shampoo... and you know what they say that when you wash your car it even seems to run faster? It's all true, man!!!

Thursday

It's been quite a while since I've confessed my soul into this journal. Mis apologias. I didn't mean for it to go on for this long. Sometimes you're just having too much fun to take note of the time that has just flown by.

Everything is running smoothly... except for my MA Class. Turns out I hate my lab partners. I hate them. They make me angry and make me go all enraged panda. They tell me one thing and then go the complete opposite way. I just don't know what to do with them. I know that you sometimes have to be all team sporty and play for the team, but quite frankly I am one step away from going on a rampage and just go all "whaaat?" when they ask me about their whereabouts. I shouldn't be talking like this. If something did happen to them, then the blame will fall all on me. Shame on you panda!!!

I have decided to enter another frantic thing called Script Frenzy. Much like NaNoWriMo, this one takes place in April and it's about making a script in 30 days. Mine is to be a graphic novel. Good luck with that, I know... thinking about doing Viddhea for it. God knows I need some inspiration!!

I also visited my old school in the past couple of days. It was so changed that I actually thought for a moment that I was like this poor kid looking at the fancy dinner at a French restaurant. After hearing all the good stuff that the new kids have, I got a little jealous about it. They get all the fancy-shmancy things that we didn't have. But then again, they will never know the struggle of having an almost-but-not-quite closed school. I am proud to say, I was there for the beginning of the revolution in Veterinary School. Now, I get to see the results and give a proud sigh.

5 TIPS FOR DIALOGU ETHAT MAKES STRONG MEN WEAP

As we now know, good dialogue is the elusive dark matter of the scriptwriting galaxy. Which is why we asked Daniel Heath, winner of the 2007 Emerging Playwright Award, to share his dialogue-writing rocket science. Daniel has had short plays produced for the Playwrights' Center of San Francisco and is a member of the San Francisco Playground Writer's pool. He also sporadically maintains a blog at scratchfiction.com. Take it away, Daniel!

As we all know, nothing brings on the man-tears like achingly perfect dialogue. But how? I've written bales of lousy dialogue myself, so I have a few pointers:

1. Don't try to write dialogue the way people actually talk.

Listen to yourself talk for 10 seconds to hear what I mean. We use an astonishing amount of filler:

ME: Um, yeah, so, I'm, uh, like, [expletive], y'know...

Moreover, we spend most of our time not saying anything:

THEM: Hey.
US: Hi.
THEM: How are you?
US: I'm good. How are you?
AUDIENCE: Unnngh. (falls unconscious)

It may be true to life, but it's incredibly boring, and all it tells us is that neither person is paying any attention. A guideline: If the audience can guess almost exactly what the next line will be, write something better.

ZORA: I love you, Max.
MAX: I love you, too.
AUDIENCE: We hate this play! (they turn on each other and fight savagely)

Try this question: How could I write this in a way that tells the audience something about the character(s) speaking? You and your audience may learn something:

ZORA: I love you, um... it's Max, isn't it?
MAX: It's anything you want it to be if you've got 50 dollars in your pocket.

2. Avoid writing dialogue that no one would ever say.

Yeah, I know, I just told you not to write dialogue like people talk. Now I'm telling you to make sure you write dialogue that we can imagine a human saying. Yes, it's contradictory, but this is art—paradox is the vodka-and-Red-Bull of human creativity.

The first trick is to read your dialogue out loud. Characters should use each others' names very sparingly. Watch out for really big or archaic words, especially if you're not 100% sure what they mean. Try not to use awkward, formal phrasing unless you're doing it on purpose. And watch out for how long you let your characters speak—most of the time humans don't let each other go more than a clause or two before interrupting.

CLEO: Lupe, you look positively evanescent in that dress. And one more thing, Lupe, insofar as I consider myself to be your friend for all these long years, and find myself therefore beholden to the necessity to say to you that actually there is a fleck of some green matter, some parsley, I think right-- (points) There.

Instead try:

CLEO: Girl, you've got--
LUPE: I know. I put it there.

Yes, you can write stylized dialogue. Your characters can speak better or worse, more elliptically or more directly, than normal humans do. But on the one hand don't make it too flat and obvious, and on the other don't make it too outlandish and artificial.

3. When you use dialogue to convey factual information, make sure we don't notice.

The kids call this "As You Know, Bob," dialogue, and it goes something like this:

ZEKE: As you know, Bob, we're stuck in this here fuel-tanker rig heading down a mountainside and our brakes are shot. It's only a matter of time until we hit a turn we can't make and eight thousand gallons of unleaded go up like the Lord himself in all His glory.

When you thudding-ly inform us of things that the characters already know, you break the illusion of your script and bust us out of the an otherwise poignant moment. Be sneakier:

ZEKE: Wife and kids?
BOB: Naw.
ZEKE: Ain't missing nothing.
BOB: You try them brakes again?
ZEKE: Been tryin'. No metal left to grind.
BOB: You reckon you're going to heaven?
ZEKE: Reckon if I am they'll have me driving a tanker truck there, too.
BOB: Don't need no gas in heaven. Everything runs on angel piss and sunshine.
ZEKE: Find out in a second here.
BOB: I told you to take it easy on them brakes.

4. If it's obvious, you don't have to spell it out. But if it's not obvious, you do.

When you're doing your job, your audience should usually understand how your characters are feeling at any given moment.

(IVAN slaps ANGELIQUE)
ANGELIQUE: Ouch! That hurt! You [expletive]! Why did you do that?

Give us credit; don't tell us what's obvious. We like that—it makes us feel smart. Instead, tell us something we didn't know about your character:

(IVAN slaps ANGELIQUE.)
ANGELIQUE: The last guy who did that is still scratching his stumps.

On the other hand, if you've got a character with a strange, hard-to-get psyche, then go ahead and lay it all out, precisely, in detail. You've heard the advice, "Show don't tell." It's very good advice most of the time, but sometimes you need to do both:

(IVAN slaps ANGELIQUE.)
ANGELIQUE: I kind of want to cut your hand off, but then I also kind of want to teach you to play Bach. I want to show you how to use your hands to bring joy into the world—joy for yourself. Joy for others. And then I'll probably cut if off anyway, but I feel like the Bach would be a really nice touch.

The same rule applies to stage directions—give the actors space, don't nag or micromanage (they'll just ignore you anyway). Take it easy on the exclamation marks. Take it easy on physical instructions. Try to make your dialogue strong enough to show them how to play the part the way you see it. But if you want something strange or counterintuitive, then lay it out clearly.

5. Your dialogue is meant to make your audience feel something.

Whatever the goal of your script, remember that you are trying to make people feel something. Keep in mind that emotions take time. Your characters are going to change during your story; give us space on the page to feel along with them. If you try to pack seven emotional reversals in a short speech, you're likely to shake us off. Let new emotions sink in, and once we're with you, take that seriously. If you're drowning cute animals and you get us all bummed out, don't expect us to be laughing at your jokes two lines later.

Your dialogue and your story are just tools to make your audience feel something—that's why the audience is sitting still for you. Given that, my final rule is more of an anti-rule: You can break every scriptwriting rule, every plot rule, every rule of basic human decency and hygiene, if it serves the emotional point you are trying to convey. Depending on the situation, sometimes dialogue that's absolutely wrong is absolutely right.

Sick Puppies -- Odd One

Odd one, you're never alone
I'm here and I will reflect you
Both of us basically unattached
To anything or anyone unless we're pretending
You live your life in your head
Some call it imagination
I'd rather focus instead on anything except
What I'm feeling
What I'm feeling
Odd one...

Hey, it's gonna be okay
Hey, we're gonna laugh at this one day

Odd one, I wish I was you
You're never concerned with acceptance
We are all desperately seeking out, a
And fitting with anyone
Who will accept us
But not you, odd one

Hey, it's gonna be okay
Hey, we're gonna laugh at this one day
Hey, it's gonna be okay
Hey, gonna laugh at this one day
Hey, it's gonna be okay
Hey, we're gonna laugh at this one day

Don't let someone tell you you're no-one
Don't let someone tell you you're no-one
Odd one...

The Oscars

And the Oscar goes to... How about being completely LAME??

Yesterday was the Oscars. And, as in every year, I had my list of possible winners (only this time, I was ACTUALLY in a raffle for a trip to Vegas). And everything was going okay... 'till stinking Sandra Bullok won for best Actress....

WTF. I mean it. W - T - F. I mean, I know she's funny and I like her. I saw The Bling Side. I liked it. But --- to say she had the rol of her life for dying her hair blonde and having a much-to-be-desired accent is just... out of line here. It's LAME, that's what this is. LAME.

I would much rather have Meryl won for Julie and Julia or how about the girl from Precious? Both of them deserved it much better than Sandra, I'm sorry.

I was sort of dissapointed too to see that Quentin Tarantino did not get best Original Screenplay for "Inglorious Bastards". I was sort of hoping that this screenplay alone would win. One of Quentin...

I knew Avatar was not going to win because, let's face it, any time any movie goes against a movie that taks about the war or political views that are in heat at the moment is a losing cause. The Hurt Locker was just that. Not a great movie, if you ask me -- I think Precious or Inglorious Bastards, both much more powerful that this piece of cinematic crap; Avatar was pretty, but very  VERY predictable, so it had no chance of winning. But, then again, it was a piece of cinematic crap that talked about the war in Iraq, so who am I to go against people who play their political agenda first? Mo'nique was right when she said that she was thankful that she won the award and that it was for the artistic merit instead of the political agenda. Sorry Mo'nique, but politics are still running the Hollywood show.

Oprah: you're mean! This girl, Sibide, did a great job at Precious, but -- com'on. Let's face it. Unless Hollywood changes their PoV about what beauty is, she ain't getting any more rols unless she's about 150 pounds lighter AT LEAST. Don't have anything vs chunky people I am quite chunky myself, but I ain't doing no movies and I ain't parading myself for it either. This girl might be a great actress but unless she loses some serious weigh she ain't getting nothing for the Hollywood glam-slam monster. So Oprah, shame on thee!!

Then again, Oprah is God.

Live from Juarez .. it's Saturday Morning!

Teachers of the world!!! (spice up your life!)
Every boy and every girl!! (spice up your life!)
Teachers of the world!!! (spice up your life!!!)
AAAAAWWWW!!! Shake it to the left (if you're having a good time!)

Okay, so don't shake it then...

I am writing this as the teacher group is taking the second mock exam in TKT. Module 2 has to do with lesson planning and material use/resource. The funny thing about it was that most teachers where making all these faces as if to say, "Psh! I already KNOW all this!!" and now that they are taking the mock exam, turns out that it's not as easy as they originally thought it would be.

Suckaaaas!!

TKT Module 3 also started and ended today. Module 3 has to do with teacher-student appropiacy in the classroom... and most of the stuff here is done by teachers in their every day practice. We just need to be reminded of what are we doing and what's the name of what we are doing.

TKT is in full bloom here in Juarez. I remember that a couple of years ago, this test was almost like talking about Alice in Wonderland and hoping to see the Mad Hatter not being Mad no more. But now, the TKT is reality and here I am, waiting for my 1st group to finish the test. This test is to certify English teachers; it's not the same to say "I know English" as to say, "I know how to TEACH English as a Second Language". We've found that out the hard way here in Mexico.

All of the teachers in this group are passionate about their teaching. They are taking this test not only for the curriculum value of it, but because they want to continue to improve their quality in teaching. Koodles for them! I hope that they continue in this path, and that they have the spirits to carry on with their students. Yes, even when I know that some of you out there read this and think "how corny!"

Good thing that we pandas do not need to certify ourselves as pandas. We're cute, smart, and adorable by nature...

..... and yes, we can be quite corny.....

Retro Class

Even though tomorrow I don't have a day off (I still have to come), I am very happy because it's friday.

School was okay... no, wait. They promised hot-dogs and there was no hot-dogs in sight. So what gives? Now we're all out of hot dogs.. Oh! And then there is the RETRO class...

I found some transparency films that I could use for my creative writing class. So, I get all excited and giddy and stop by the main office to pick up a projector for these films. I told Carmelita, "Carmelita, today I'm gonna ask you for something few people ask nowadays!" she looks at me funny and says, "A projector?" Yes! She then points to the 3 projectors this school has. One has a BIG banner that says "Does not Work!" The other two even had spider webs on them! One did not work. The third one was okay, so I take this one to my class. First thing that comes out of  Mr. Mauricio (one of my students) is:

"What is this? Is it a retro class?"
Me: Nooo
Mauricio: ... why a projector then? Didn't they have canons?
Me: Yes, they had power point canons, but I need the projector because I'm going to show you something...

Everyone was looking at me as if I was as old as dinosaurs. Then came to mind a time when I took some of these transparencies in color and I was the oooooh!! wonder!!! Yeah, that was five years ago.

Five years! Has technology really advanced that much in five years??!! o.O

Mobscene (Lyrics)

Mobscene
Marylin Manson

"Ladies, and gentlemen"
We are the things of shapes to come
Your freedom's not free and dumb
This depression is great
The Deformation Age, they know my name
Waltzing to scum, and base and
Married to the pain

BANG, we want it
BANG, we want it
BANG, BANG, BANG, BANG, BANG

You came to see the mobscene
I know it isn't your scene
It's better than a sex scene and it's
So fucking obscene, obscene, yeah

You want commitment?
Put on your best suit, get your arms around me
Now we're going down, down, down
You want commitment?
Put on your best suit, get your arms around me
Now we're going down, down, down

[GIRLS]
Be obscene, be, be, obscene
Be obscene, baby, and not heard

The day that love opened our eyes,
We watched the world end
We have "high" places but we have no friends
The world told us sin's not good but we know it's great
War-time full-frontal drugs, sex-tank armor plate

BANG, we want it
BANG, we want it
BANG, BANG, BANG, BANG, BANG

You came to see the mobscene
I know it isn't your scene
It's better than a sex scene and it's
So fucking obscene, obscene, yeah

You want commitment?
Put on your best suit, get your arms around me
Now we're going down, down, down
You want commitment?
Put on your best suit, get your arms around me
Now we're going down, down, down

[GIRLS]
Be obscene, be, be, obscene
Be obscene, baby, and not heard
Be obscene, be, be, obscene
Be obscene, baby, and not heard

You came to see the mobscene
I know it isn't your scene
It's better than a sex scene and it's
So fucking obscene, obscene, yeah

You want commitment?
Put on your best suit, get your arms around me
Now we're going down, down, down
You want commitment?
Put on your best suit, get your arms around me
Now we're going down, down, down

"Ladies and gentlemen, be obscene! Be obscene! Be, be obscene!"
[GIRLS]
Be obscene, be, be, obscene
Be obscene, baby, and not heard
Be obscene, be, be, obscene
Be obscene, baby, and not heard

BANG, BANG, BANG, BANG, BANG

Comics: Sub-Literatura?

Comics: ¿sub- literatura?

Jutsu-Me

The university is organizing a comic/anime/manga convention. I think it's a very cool idea and the wheels are turning towards the goal. The convention is May 8th 2010, and the idea is to get all the artists together under one roof. There has been other conventions in Juarez aimed at the comic book phenomenon, but I think that the main thing here is that (a) is by a private university and (b) it will have funding ($$$)

Right now the design teachers and students are doing the logo, image, and the promotion things. My job here is to know all this and see if my friends (who are great artists) want to participate in the event. I have some people confirming their assistance. Others are still in "stand by". I hope that this goes on to be a great event.

Comic book culture is kind of new here -- and the city needs a bit of distraction from all the bad vibe that's going on around here.

So... Today Jutsu-Me is born. How will it go on, only the powers that be will know.

PS: When I have the poster/logo/banner to Jutsu-Me I'll post it here. The poster was made by Fabian for the 2006 ConFront
